My Project

First graders are naturally curious about animals, insects, dinosaurs, and ocean creatures. In our classroom, we turn that curiosity into meaningful learning through coaching conversations. Instead of simply listening to the teacher explain concepts, students work together to observe, question, and guide each other’s thinking.

To support this type of learning, I am requesting a variety of animal figures and matching card sets, including forest animals, farm animals, dinosaurs, insects, safari animals, and marine life.

These hands-on models allow students to explore science concepts in a way that is interactive, visual, and engaging.

Students will work in small coaching teams where they rotate through roles such as Animal Expert, Habitat Coach, Question Leader, and Evidence Finder. As students match animals to their cards and examine the figures, they will guide each other by asking questions like, “Where might this animal live?” “What does it eat?” or “How is this animal different from the others?”

The variety of animal groups will allow students to explore ecosystems, habitats, and food chains. They can compare farm animals to wild animals, insects to dinosaurs, and ocean animals to land animals while discussing how living things survive in different environments. The life cycle and food chain set will help students understand how animals depend on one another in nature.

Because the models are small, colorful, and easy to handle, every student can participate directly in the investigation. Instead of waiting for their turn, students will be actively sorting, matching, discussing, and building understanding together.

Through these coaching-style activities, students will strengthen communication skills, teamwork, and scientific thinking. Our classroom becomes a place where young learners practice observing carefully, asking thoughtful questions, and supporting each other as they discover how the natural world works.
