This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach at a Title I school. Many students get free or reduced-price lunches. The majority of students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and may only get the two meals a day they receive at the high school. My students bring enthusiasm, a positive attitude, and curiosity to class every day. Our campus has a strong sense of community; we really are a family. We even have a supper program where students can eat dinner after school for free.

We need a small freezer, ice machine, snow cone machine, 5-gallon water bottle with dispenser, and ice trays to create a lab station for our units on DNA and Biotechnology.

I am so excited to be able to run our DNA fingerprinting, bacteria transformation, and gel electrophoresis labs this year. Our science freezer is no longer working because it was 20+ years old and had to be thrown out for safety reasons. Some of our reagents and restriction enzymes to run the biotech labs need to be kept frozen. In addition, the reagents are so sensitive that each lab table needs their own bucket of crushed ice so the samples can stay on ice until they are ready to be pipetted into an agarose gel or on a plate. My students will be able to use the water and freezer station to set up their biotech labs.

We need aprons, oven mitts, and test tube holders for when we heat up any chemicals and liquids for proper protection. The window shelves are for my students that want to put their plant projects in indirect sunlight and for when we propagate plants.
