My students need sets of guided reading books at first and second grade levels.

My Students
A day in the life of a first grader at our school, includes silliness, curious questions, writing stories, practicing using our manners, brilliant ideas, dance parties, listening to our favorite authors and hard work. They enjoy spending time outside, learning through play and fostering friendships that will carry them through their educational career at our K-8 school. Hands-on learning and integrating technology into their skill building and projects excites them as learners.
Our energetic group of students enjoys learning using hands-on, whole group methods.
They are movers and shakers and enjoy a variety of work areas, tools, dividers, seating choices and movable work surfaces. These tools help increase their focus, provides them with movement as they work and helps them feel accomplished and successful.
My Project
Our kindergarten and first grade teams are working together to create a leveled literacy library with multiple copies of books. These books will be introduced and read with students in guided reading groups. After our students read their guided reading book with their teacher, they read it again to someone at home. For the next week or so, students have the book in their book boxes to re-read each day to practice fluency and deepen their comprehension. We are slowly building our library and need to add to our end of first grade to end of second grade reading sets.
It is important to have high quality, leveled books for our strong readers to keep their interest and strengthen their reading skills.
We are looking to build our collection of leveled books at all levels for guided reading groups. When we run out of materials, we end up moving them to a new level before they are ready. Having more books at various levels, students will continue working on their first grade literacy skills while still engaged with varying subjects in their leveled books. We tend to put our energy and focus into our struggling readers and provide more materials to help them become better readers. It is equally important for us to build our stock of on level books to keep our on target and high achieving readers moving in the right direction.
Our overarching dream is to eventually compile enough sets of leveled literacy books that six kindergarten and first grade classes will be able to pool their resources, create a leveled book room, and provide students with more opportunity to get new titles in their hands. By providing students with the materials they need, we are engaging them in literacy and creating a life-long passion for books.
