Help me give my students the opportunity to experience the joy of music through children’s handbells, fostering creativity, teamwork, and musical expression in a school where they currently have no access to music education.
What I love most about my students is their joy, energy, and eagerness to learn when given something creative and hands-on. Even though they come from a school with no formal music program, their enthusiasm shines when they’re given a chance to express themselves musically. Last Christmas, I brought handbells from my church and led the students in a simple program for their families. The result was something truly special — smiles, proud parents, and children who felt accomplished and confident.
Having our own set of classroom handbells would open the door for year-round music learning.
These colorful bells, paired with matching color-coded music, allow every child — regardless of reading level or prior music experience — to participate and succeed. They’ll develop skills in rhythm, pitch recognition, coordination, listening, and collaboration.
This project directly supports the Alabama Course of Study: Arts Education – General Music, Grade 2, especially:
Standard 3: "Perform rhythmic patterns and melodies using body percussion, instruments, or voice."
Standard 5: "Demonstrate expressive qualities (e.g., dynamics, tempo) while performing music."
Standard 7: "Perform simple patterns and songs in group settings with appropriate posture, breathing, and technique."
The handbells will help students meet these standards through interactive and inclusive music-making. They’re not just instruments — they’re tools for helping my students grow academically, socially, and creatively. I believe music is a pathway to joy, discipline, and expression. With this grant, I can continue to give my students opportunities they wouldn’t otherwise have — and help them find their voice, one note at a time.
