This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are a diverse community of learners ranging from non-English speakers to native English speakers. A large majority of my students come from the China-town borough of Philadelphia, and for some, this is their first time in the United States learning! Those who aren't from China-town, are from the surrounding South Philadelphia area, and we also have a couple of homeless shelters in our catchment, which students often live at as well. My students get to learn in an inclusive and welcoming environment with a great parent support group.
My Project
As we continue to build our "gym within the gym", the natural progression for us is gymnastics rings. Students will learn coordination, upper body strength, and balance. Gymnastics rings can be used far beyond traditional gymnastics. Activities such as crossfit, suspended yoga, and obstacle courses can add variety to our already rich daily workout. Younger students can use them as a form of monkey bars and swing from ring to ring. Older students can practice various yoga poses and build confidence in their bodies. Our gym is all about acceptance and training, it becomes easier to accept your body as you grow, learn, and build. My students are ready for the physical challenges of high school because of our variety.
