Help me give my students safe solar eclipse viewing glasses and Kleenex tissues.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Horne's classroom raised $527

My Project
This coming October a partial annular solar eclipse will be visible from our region. The moon will pass between Earth and the Sun, but since the moon will be near its farthest point from Earth, it will appear smaller and will not block the entire Sun. The viewer will observe a bright ring of light around the moon! Although our region will not be in position to fully see the ring, we will be able to view a partial eclipse.
This eclipse is a great opportunity to get all students of our middle school looking up, observing it through safety glasses, wondering, and asking questions!
When they are back at school on Monday they will talk to each other, compare and contrast observations, and review explanations of what occurred. Our science department prefers students do an activity, observe, and make their own discoveries. Then, we go through a process of connecting it to what they already know, uncover and challenge misconceptions, and come to an understanding of a concept rather than just memorize facts. Science classes can use the eclipse to discuss topics in astronomy, electromagnetic spectrum, and development of technology. Math classes can tie in measurement, proportions, angles, and distance. Social studies classes can discuss rituals and scientific understanding of various cultures and civilizations. And think of the rich history of the Sun and moon, and light and darkness in literature and art!
We will be working hard this fall to improve our campus climate and create a strong sense of community. Eclipse viewing glasses for all students will create a schoolwide commonality right at the end of the first quarter when we review how the year is going and changes students and staff think are needed. October also ushers in cold season, so everyone will need Kleenex tissues!
