This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This year I will be teaching 1st grade for the first time. I will be the General Education teacher in a ICT (Inclusive Co-Teaching) classroom. I have been a part of this school community for the last 5 years and am excited to see them learn and grow this year.
I know that my students will benefit from a lot of hands-on experience in math.
I plan to use the ten frames, counters and other materials in our Math Stations, or centers, as a way for students to practice and extend the math standards we are learning.
The materials I am requesting will help me organize the materials for myself, my co-teacher, and the support staff so we can serve our students. Students will build on their understanding of addition and subtraction this year by solving different types of word problems and situations, including adding 3 1-digit numbers, learning about balanced equations, and comparing numbers. The balance scales will give them a visual representation of the equal symbol and comparison symbols. The Rekenrek beads can be used for problem-solving to compose and decompose numbers. The counters can be used in a variety of ways including with measurement tools as non-standard measures.
