My Students
Patience...? Difficult for many adults, but impossible for my musical (and squirmy) 5-8 year olds!! Especially when musical instruments are involved. My students need these instruments to have a rich, interactive musical experience each time they come to music class.
Our students love the arts and being able to express themselves creatively.
Each class has both music and art twice a week, but suffer due to lack of materials. While we do our best with what we have, I would love to offer the best experience I can to these students while they are in music class.
Our school is a small, high achieving neighborhood school in the heart of a large urban city. The small size of our school (one of each grade K- 8th grade, and a full K-8 program for students on the Autism Spectrum) contributes to our unique family atmosphere that values fundamental regard for all children. Our learning community serves an economically and culturally diverse population of students living both in the surrounding neighborhood and communities from around the city, all of whom receive free breakfast and lunch each day.
My Project
With these instruments, each student can participate in the activity at the same time. This allows my students to really learn what it is like to be an integral part of the group, teaches them responsibility and makes them feel important. These activities can also help my students with their reading and language skills!! The more exposure they have to words and the rhythm and flow of the text, the better their reading in the classroom can be!
Participating in these activities allows my students to have a way to express themselves freely, channel their anxiety and offers an outlet for emotion that many have a hard time articulating.
It is my hope that participating in music class can help take them away from their hardships at home and allows them to have a second of joy and accomplishment as they create all kinds of music.
In addition to all of the social and emotional benefits that participating music affords, research shows us that music, especially playing an instrument, increases a student's language skills, their ability to focus and increases their memory skills.
Please help me to brighten my students day and to give them the best experience in music that I can!
