RHYTHM is the spirit of life! From a beating heart to dancing the night away, rhythm is the basis for everything we do. My devoted percussion students are the heartbeat of our band. They need to practice but cannot take the drums home. I am asking for 8 practice pads and a set of temple blocks.
My students are an amazingly wonderful group of young people.
They come from a wide range of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. I do not merely admire them because of their talent, but more importantly their stellar character. They attend a large, urban public middle school and are deeply committed to the band program. It is their work ethic, determination and humor that motivates me to be a better teacher.
My Project
My percussion students are in desperate need of practice pads. The majority of my students walk or take public transit to get to and from school. It is impossible for them to carry drums home. Practice pads will allow them to develop their basic rhythm and playing technique at home.
I would also like to request a set of temple blocks. Many of our pieces require this wonderful percussive effect, but we cannot afford a set. In the past, we have used scrap blocks of wood, but they do not get the proper projection needed to cut across a 100-piece band.
Our school band program reaches some 225 students each and every year.
The remarkable young people I teach take a great deal of pride in the band. Over the past few years, our school has endured severe budget cuts. As a result the band program now relies on grants and fundraisers to obtain basic classroom supplies. My students need your help to get the materials they need to practice and become better musicians.
