Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students - these great musicians - must understand the basic foundations of music and performance - rhythm and their own passion.
I teach vocal music and drama to sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade students in an extremely diverse, low-income middle school. We utilize the Orff-Schulwerk philosophy of teaching, which includes a variety of movement, improvisation, instrument exploration, and singing. My students become musicians by exploring and finding their passions, emotions, and creativity in music.
My students have the opportunity to become passionate about music in a day and age when expression is often ignored. As middle-schoolers in a low-income situation, my students need to be given every possible opportunity to fall in love with music. That comes from more than just singing or playing a marching band instrument.
Music is a part of all international cultures, and my students need to explore that. But they are unable to truly experience and own that music by listening to recordings. They must participate in it. They are unable to do so because I have none of the instruments necessary to experience world music. The supplies and the funds to purchase them are completely unavailable, due to the bulk of my budget needing to be spent on choral octavos and contest fees.
I need a very wide variety of world music instruments. These can be used in creation of tone color representations of ideas and objects. These can be used emphasize rhythmic patterns. These can be used to teach multi-part musical ideas. These can be used to teach form. These can be used to teach world cultures. These can be used to share the joy of music to fellow students and the surrounding community. These can be used to celebrate the diversity of my students. These can be used to lift up the self-worth of my students. These can be used to develop their imaginations and creativity. These can be used to empower my students.
You will make possible a passion for music that is often ignored in modern society. You will show my students the importance of creativity and creation. They will become a part of the spirit of invention. Music assists in motor skills, brain function, and inter- and intrapersonal relationships. Music creates a better society. Your assistance will foster that society.
