How can a teacher get preschoolers to sit and become engaged in learning words and rhymes when she has to compete with devices, television and other modern gizmo's? Fast foods have discovered that the toys in their meals entice children. I want to try the same thing.
I teach a very lovable group of preschoolers who, by no fault of their own, have obstacles to overcome in order to succeed in reading.
Our school is considered a Title 1, high risk school. Some of my children are learning English as a second language, some of my children have cognitive delays and others are not exposed to rich language and vocabulary. Thus they may not be exposed to enough practice with spoken language. Research has repeatedly shown that knowledge of the sounds made when listening and speaking a language is considered one of the top predictors of children's future reading achievement.
My Project
One thing I have learned about the children is that they are visual and tactile learners. They learn best when they are using as many senses as possible.
I am requesting your assistance in purchasing a Rhyme and Read Activity Center and a Match a Sound Phonemic Awareness Set. Each of these kits contain little objects that resemble the real thing. The children can feel, touch and see the objects that begin, end or rhyme with other objects. The children really become engaged and interested in learning while playing with the objects. They are interested in saying and repeating sounds and words when they can touch the objects.
I want the children in my class to understand that learning can be as exciting at school as it is getting that fast food surprise toy.
I also want them to be able to achieve and feel that they are successful before the first grade. Most of all I want them to be able to read and love reading. Your donation to this project will enable me to entice the children to learn and concentrate on pre-reading skills such as learning and hearing sounds in words.
