This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This year, I get to teach history and empowered reading classes to energetic, creative, and fun-going middle schoolers from South Los Angeles. The classes are a mixture of general education and special education students. This unique opportunity allows me to develop assignments that both challenge my kids and give them a chance to help their peers. Some can barely sound out their letters and others are avid readers, but all of them are eager to learn more.
My Project
There is almost never a day in class I don't hear my students ask me if I have food or tell me that they are hungry. This will happen even after coming in from lunchtime. The truth is many of our students will opt to not eat the lunch being offered at school or choose instead to play with their friends instead of eating. I can't blame them. They have exactly 30 minutes to leave their classroom, walk to the lunch area, choose to get in line to get their food, sit down and eat or hang out with their friends whom they haven't been able to see or talk to much all day.
We don't offer any other nutrition or recess breaks for our students.
So its a tough choice. Also, they often complain that the food is either not what they like or will feel it is uncool to eat the food being offered and in an effort to not be singled out will opt to not eat. The way I handle the snacks is by handing out points that earn them snacks. I ensure to give out as many points as possible to make sure kids get at least a small snack. If I see a student really needs a snack, isn't feeling well, or just needs some TLC because they're not having a good day I like to offer them too. Haivng snacks is just something that is part of the classroom culture. Please consider donating to our classroom snacks and be part of our positive classroom culture.
