My Students

I teach second grade to a class of brilliant girls in New York City. Many of my students are English language learners and children with special needs. Most qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

All of my students are creative, thoughtful, and eager learners, and much of their knowledge this year has been expressed through their literacy and play.

It has been so exciting to see them fully engaged each day as they learn through collaboration and play with their peers.

I teach 28 bright and beautiful first-graders in a high-needs area of New York. My students and I have been working intensively to get to grade-level proficiency in reading. We set realistic reading goals and are working to make at least one year's growth. They have a goal-setting mindset.

My Project

We are growing our school "store" that helps students reward great behavior. Research shows that teaching expectations and rewarding students who follow them increases positive behavior and decreases negative behavior. After they are caught being good, my students will trade in their "scholar dollars" for various prizes. Students can get school supplies or small toys to motivate them as they build positive habits. While I typically buy the prizes for the store, I thought that I would like the students to choose their own coveted toy or prize themselves as an EPIC end of the year surprise. I am requesting gift cards to Target so that students can go and choose their own special toy on the Target website. In past years, we have taken a field trip to our local store during the school day and students were able to choose a toy and pay with the gift card. This year, we must do it online. Still, I can only imagine how incredibly special this day will be and it will be a great motivator for continuing to make good choices in school.

When student behavior is positive, more learning can occur.

Please help me give attention to students for the right things: good behavior and academics. These two things will help my students not only now, but build habits that will lead to their future success.
