This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In deep East Oakland live the most brilliant, powerful, and resilient students and I have the honor of teaching them. My eighth graders are the reason for my personal growth and strength. They are fierce warriors who believe in social justice and strive to use their voices to speak for themselves and others. They are filled with so much love for themselves and their community and have a strong desire to explore and understand the world around them. My students are faced with numerous challenges at home and in their community. I admire their strength and courage to face all adversity and still make it to school.
As their English Language Arts teacher, I watch my students progress as avid readers and strong communicators each and every day.
They stand together as a class to discuss social issues that impact their community and they take great pride in their town. Most of my students have been exposed to gang and gun violence and family trauma, yet their resilience is extraordinary. I have so much to learn from these amazing young adults.
My Project
My eighth graders have accomplished so much this school year, from tackling family challenges to navigating a school year that continues through this pandemic. They have remained strong in their efforts to show up to school and work hard to prepare for high school. With all of these challenges, it can be a struggle to stay focused in class and get work done.
I use raffle tickets to award students with a range of prizes every week, including snacks and fidgets.
These small incentives allow for students to feel accomplished for their hard work. Many of my students need extra support with sitting still, so fidgets have been so useful for them.
