This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are all 11th graders who are new to English. Most have been in the U.S.A. for four years or less. They have survived war and the pandemic, flown over oceans, and walked across deserts to be here, in New York, at our school to get an education and make better lives for themselves and their families.
I am requesting special reward t-shirt for our reading challenge.
My goal is to help them with reading by giving them books they will fall in love with. I have invited all of my students to take part in a "100 Pages Challenge," in which they'll read at least 100 pages of the same book within five weeks. Everyone who meets this goal will receive the t-shirt as a reward.
To help them get there, I have stocked my classroom library with books that represent a diverse range of cultural and life experiences, and I helped them choose a book that matches their reading level and interests. Most students are reading in English but some are reading in their native languages.
