Revolutionary Perspective

Help me give my students diverse literature about the American Revolution which will help students understand the war from multiple perspectives.

My Project

While studying the American Revolution, I want to give my students the opportunity to experience the stories from multiple perspectives. Most historical fiction centers around the stories of white colonists like the Founding Fathers.

By having students read historical fiction and biographies from diverse colonial perspectives, my students will develop a better understanding of the complexities of the war from different points of view.

I researched novels and picture books that accurately share the stories of women, Native Americans, people who were enslaved, free black colonists, Loyalists, and children. Students will read the novels in small groups, discussing the readings with their group and then sharing that learning with other students from other literature groups. This allows all of them the opportunity to hear different perspectives to help us understand the full story of what happened and how each group was impacted by the war.
