This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students consist of three classes of careworn kids from varying backgrounds. They come to school somedays with smiles on their faces and other days they arrive crestfallen. On any day when they are feeling less than happy, I myself, my fellow teachers, or their fellow students ensure that they have someone to talk to and a reason to smile. The majority of these kids do not come from homes where everything is provided for them, some of them are caring for younger siblings or waiting until school to have something to eat. Regardless of what hardships they face outside of school I see that they find reasons to smile almost every day. They are very mature in this way. Just last school year, when one student was having a particularly difficult day another student decided for himself to stick by their side so that they didn't feel alone. My students are very special because they are capable of facing the world in ways that someone their age shouldn't have to and which sounds exhausting. Yet, they arrive at school every day and put themselves through that uncomfortable feeling of not knowing so that they can grow and learn.

My Project

As a school we have recess materials that are used and worn. I teach three classes in the school and I teach them all writing. Prior to my surgery I was able to go outside and play with them all the time. When I would go outside with the students I noticed that the the new recess materials would be swiped up in a second and there would be some students who would be left using equipment that was old and worn. In addition, there are large groups of students who love to play soccer but who only get to play when another student brings his or her soccer ball from home. The majority of the materials in this project are to supply as many students as possible with recess materials that will last and can be distributed to as many as want to play.

Making education fun has helped 60 fourth-graders and 20 fifth-graders to make up for lost time during the pandemic.

I hope to supply my students with reading comprehension games that they can play, enjoy, and learn from daily. They will be able to use ruled whiteboards to improve their handwriting and become high-level readers with help of the reading fluency packets from Lakeshore. Finding enjoyable, durable materials are essential to a fun and lasting learning environment. This project will make such a classroom a reality.
