it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As the sole health teacher at our high school in the Bronx, all of our students walk through my door to earn the health credit required for graduation. I have spent the last several years evolving my curriculum to transcend beyond that of the tired, cliched stereotype many folks have experienced.
The Bronx is widely considered to be the "unhealthiest" of the five NYC boroughs, and I am always brainstorming new ways to teach kids how to properly care for themselves.
My Project
Although teachers across the city are eager to see our children return to school, we are also finding ourselves extremely disheartened. In addition to hastily restructuring our practices in order to make material exciting and interesting despite significant physical limitations, we are also struggling with the fact that many of the city's old school buildings have been poorly kept for decades.
The combination of severe cuts to our funding and the shortage of adequate cleaning supplies has forced many educators to abandon efforts to design comforting rooms that our children will consider safe spaces.
Research on the relationship between stress and learning has indicated that high-stress environments can seriously interfere with a student's critical thinking, memory storage/retrieval, and overall learning process. Many of our students have experienced significant trauma, stress, and loss throughout the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. As classrooms that are cramped, disorderly, and run-down can discourage the learning process, I'd like to provide a space that is clean, fresh, bright, and calming. Our students deserve a place that will allow them to relax and focus, as many of them view school as a sanctuary away from their harsh realities.
For my project, I have selected the following materials in an effort to maximize cleanliness, aesthetic, and sustainability:
1. A variety of air-filtering plants that will help counter the historically poor air quality students are constantly exposed to in the Bronx;
2. Bulk tissues, masks, cleaners, and paper towels that will help limit the transmission of germs in my classroom;
3. Adhesive wallpaper as an environmentally-friendly alternative to bulletin board paper, as they withstand damage and are reusable;
4. Lamps with energy-efficient bulbs to replace harsh florescent lighting
