Help me give my students stories of experiences that have affected famous people such as George Takei and John Lewis as they lived through history and now share their stories.
My students are 11th grade English/Language Arts students in an urban setting (Madison, WI). This project will benefit the students in my English classes as they participate in literature circles and choice book reading based around historically-based graphic novels and study the effects of traumatic events in history and mental health.
Students enjoy having choices in their lives, and in the past year as I have been offering them choices in what they read, the interaction, interest, and buy-in with English class has increased leaps and bounds.
We have a high number of free/reduced lunch students, a 47% African-American/Bi-racial population, and my classes range from ELL classes (multiple native languages) to general-tracked classes to Honors classes.
My Project
Students enrolled in my class, English 3, will be in learning teams within their other classes (Modern US History, Sociology, and Health/Wellness) and will be looking at career pathways involved in health. Focusing on mental health, these books will open up topics such as immigration, Civil Rights, personal violence, and the idea of generational PTSD among survivors and children/grandchildren of those survivors through the use of graphic novels. These types of novels are accessible and of high interest to students.
Creating book groups around graphic novels will provide a various reading/literature experiences and will provide a stepping stone for research.
