My classroom consists of thirteen students grades Kindergarten to 4th grade. It is a self-contained, low-incidence special education room. The individuals are diverse learners who have moderate to severe disabilities that include autism, Down syndrome, intellectual disabilities, and speech and language impairments. My students come from all over the city of Chicago, making the class very diverse in terms of background and culture.
No matter the challenging situations and difficulties they face, my students continue to come to school happy and eager to learn; they are amazing!
We are a Chicago Public School.
Currently, our district is in a financial crisis. Because of this, the school lacks funding to appropriately support our classroom and students. With a little help from DonorsChoose, we can get tools to support, enhance, and facilitate learning in a productive way!
My Project
We are moving into a new, bigger classroom next year which allows us to add some additions to our room. I have many students returning to my room next year as well as a handful of new faces. My current students love to read and relax, but they have little room to do so.
In the new room, I will be able to allocate a space for a reading corner, allowing my students to engage in one of their favorite pastimes.
Many of the students have autism, and, as a result, require a lot of structure and boundaries to help them be successful across all settings. This includes sitting properly, keeping hands to self, and using supplies/furniture appropriately.
Currently, the students attempt to lie down on the floor while they read. This raises safety issues because they touch other students, block exits, and more. The couch will provide the students with structure to sit in the designated area without disrupting others. It will provide boundaries for the area, indicating a designated space for reading. Thanks for your consideration!
