Rev Up Recess and Get More Students Active

My students need a variety of equipment at recess time to work on fitness, skills, sportsmanship, social skills, and most of all having fun and being healthy.

My Students

My K-5th grade students are hard workers, love to learn, and love to move. We are a dual language school where some classrooms are mixed with native spanish speakers and native english speakers. My other classes are very diverse learners with many different cultures represented. We often celebrate our school's diversity along with student achievements, and striving to instill good character strengths.

We are one of the largest elementary schools in our district of 20 schools.

Over 50% of our students receive free and reduced breakfast and lunch, along with blessing in a bag. Many of our students are faced with many challenges in and out of the classroom. Several students start the school year below grade level and/or work to acquire english language skills. Despite these challenges, students are excited to come to school to learn and have fun.

My Project

We developed a student wellness team to help motivate k4-5th grade students to get moving, eat better, and become healthier. One of the biggest requests from my student wellness team and students of all ages is a lack of equipment on the playground for recess time. Students of all grades get 2 recesses a day. Students do have the typical recess equipment like monkey bars, slides, gliders, climbing objects, and basketball hoops. Students either play on the playground equipment, talk with teachers, sit around, or stand around talking.

The student wellness team has developed a plan to rev up our recess time for the entire school.

Here is their plan for the equipment and how it will be used by all k4-5th grade students.

1. Playground balls will be used for 4 square, kickball, individual and partner skill work like throwing, catching, rolling, and kicking. It will also promote teamwork/sportsmanship along with understanding basic game rules.

2. Short and long jump ropes with be used to learn a variety of rhythmical jumping skills as an individual or with a partner.

4. Scoops will be used for individual and partner eye-hand coordination skills along with teamwork/sportsmanship.

5. Pickle ball paddles and balls will be used in the 4-square area for eye-hand coordination, striking skills, teamwork, game play, and understanding game rules.

6. Footballs and basketballs will be used to play mini games or partner toss and catch.

This extra equipment will help engage the other children who do not play on the playground equipment. It will increase activity level and get students moving. Most of all, it will help promote teamwork, sportsmanship, skill development, and an understanding of how to play a variety of games. Some other added benefits would be decreased behavior problems or getting students ready to learn.
