This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school focuses on students of high academic needs. We are an elementary Title I school. The students within my school reside in a low, socio-economic environment and deal with various personal issues while simultaneously struggling to fulfill academic obligations. My classes incorporate a diverse ethnic mix of students. Students are of African/Black American, Latin, African, and a mix of other ethnic backgrounds. Classes consist of a small percentage of students on grade level and a very large percentage of below grade level students. Classes include special and general education students. In addition, there is an abundance of students who enroll as English Language Learners on all grade levels. I teach differentiated English Language Arts lessons daily within this diverse learning environment.
This year, I will be teaching literacy through theater arts (live instruction combined with remote learning).
I will also be teaching reading intervention on all grade levels (live and remotely). Theater will expose and allow young students to learn through figurative language, story elements, poetry, stage production, puppetry, music, and dance. They will read, write, listen, and speak through dramatic play which will have a great learning impact on our student's backgrounds.
My Project
The materials which I am requesting will help my students in many ways. I am an elementary theater arts teacher who would like to engage my students in theater arts when they return to the classroom school year 2020. I am seeking effective electronic equipment and theater decor to use in my theater arts classroom and to provide to my students an authentic theater experience the best way I can. Our school auditorium is under construction and the date for completion has been pushed back due to the urgency to work on school projects relating to sanitizing and making safe the school’s learning environments. I am requesting a way to have dramatic plays and theater arts performances in the classroom. I am seeking decor to set a theater-based environment. I desire to make a positive impact on my students by engaging them in thematic theater arts-based literacy lessons in an impactful way and making it fun for my students so that they will enjoy their return to brick and mortar. I would like to do anything I can to improve the way my students learn when they return to the classroom and ultimately for them to become more productive readers and writers integrated with the arts.
