Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am the Mental Health Counselor at a Title I school located in East Palo Alto, California. One of our goals as a school is to serve the WHOLE CHILD. This means in addition to providing a comprehensive academic education, we also prioritize students' social and emotional learning and well-being.

I work to promote students’ self-awareness and self-regulation as well as social awareness and social skills.

For many of our students, school is one of very few places offerings emotional and mental health resources and supports.

Ninety-one percent of our students participate in the free and reduced-price meal program. Ninety percent of our students speak English as a second language. Ninety-eight percent of our students will be first-generation college students. Ninety percent of our students are Latino; 6.5% are African-American; 2% are Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander.

Our students are scholars striving to become the best versions of themselves, and they deserve all the resources and supports that are readily available to students in higher income communities.

My Project

Like many schools, we are in the process of bringing our students back to campus for in-person learning after over a year of distance learning and sheltering in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While welcoming students back to school in person has been extremely exciting and giving us hope of fully reopening our school soon, it has not been without its challenges.

We have once again had to reinvent how we teach; essentially building the plane as we fly it for the second time since the start of the pandemic. Considerations such as masks, social distancing, and other safety measures have had to be put in place in ways our students have never experienced at school before.

Many of the materials, especially Social and Emotional Learning materials, that students are used to having access to at school are not available to them at this time due to our inability to sanitize these materials in between student use. I am hoping to purchase some sensory materials and fidgets that can be easily sanitized, as well as books that can help address many of the feelings that students might be having around returning to school.
