Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is an amazing place to be, but my students have a lot of needs that are not met at home. That does not stop my students from being an energetic bunch of learners.

We have a very high level of English Language Learners who come to school everyday ready to learn despite the challenges they face.

Our school is also 100% free or reduced lunches. Although my students may have these struggles, they come in daily ready to learn and grow.

My Project

My students have high social and emotional needs. Unfortunately these skills and strategies do not come to school with them, rather they need to be taught. To make them well rounded citizens, it is my job to teach them about social and emotional strategies and skills. So along with my regular curriculum, I am teaching integrated social and emotional lessons.

My students and I work daily on their social and emotional needs, meaning we talk about feelings and why we feel the way we do using restorative practices.

Restorative practices builds healthy communities, increases social behaviors, decreases antisocial behavior, repairs harm and restores relationships. It is a great way to help build relationship with my students who I have for three years in a row.

This large size rug will work wonders with my students. It will be a cozy place to meet and touch base each and every day. The rug will be our central meeting spot to discuss how we are doing as well as complete work. The rug will be the spot to hold our restorative circles. What are restorative circles you may wonder? A restorative circle is a safe place for students to talk about anything they would like. It can be student or teacher run based off of the social and emotional needs of the students. Right now we are standing or sitting on the hard bare floor when we do our circles, so we can't really open up because we aren't comfortable. This rug will make our classroom and students so much more likely to open up and feel ready to share.
