My students need equipment to restock the Makerspace, including PLA filament, batteries, wire and parts for the 3D printers in our classroom.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Technology; it is essential in today's world. Unfortunately, some of our students in urban school districts do not have regular access to technology.
I want my students to develop a lifelong interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and bringing current technology into the classroom would help make that a reality.
My students are hardworking, young people that come largely from low income minority homes. My students attend an urban middle school and currently do not have sufficient access to twenty-first century technology in the classroom. I think it would greatly increase interest in science, technology, engineering and math if my students had better access to technology. I have tried to get students more involved with technology, but it is difficult because not all students have the resources at home necessary to engage in new age learning opportunities. I hope that DonorsChoose will help me fulfill my dream of creating a Makerspace where students can imagine and design.
My Project
This year my students are working on a Capstone Project, where they have been tasked to solve a problem in the world by creating a mobile application or physical product. Many of them chose to develop a physical product to solve their chosen problem. This Capstone Project serves as a culminating project for the eighth graders in our magnet program.
I am hoping to restock the classroom Makerspace so that students have the opportunity and materials needed to produce innovative solutions to problems big and small.
A Makerspace is a place where students have access to miscellaneous materials/technology with the intention of promoting critical thinking and problem solving. Our Makerspace allows students to explore, imagine, problem solve, utilize 3-D design and take their ideas into the twenty-first century. In our Makerspace, we have everything from recycled materials/cardboard to 3-D printers. Over time, the Makerspace gets depleted of certain consumables so we need nozzles, tubes, 3-D filament, wiring and batteries. That is the purpose of this project request.
This past semester I had students use the Makerspace to create projects like Hurricane-proof fences, 3-D printed remote controlled boats, and motion activated candy dispensers. I am hoping to continue to restock our Makerspace so that a new group of students can have the same opportunity to innovate and create.
