This little crew is always ready and willing to go above and beyond, no matter what the task. They love to have fun, but they also love to learn. That is what I love about them. They never let anything stand in their way, not even the fact that more than three-fourths of our school population is considered below the poverty level. They are so determined to prosper and grow.
Their little brains are like little sponges that soak up anything and everything I can throw their way.
The more I throw the more they long for. It's amazing that their little heads can hold so much information yet yearn for more.
My Project
My students, my assistant, and I are just starting to get settled back in after Hurricane Florence. Just as the students and I were starting to settle in and learn one another we were uprooted due to the storm. We were out of school for approximately three weeks while waiting for the flood waters to recede enough that we could safely get back into school. Now that we are back in school we are finally learning what normal feels like. It was as if we had two first days of school. Something I hope to never experience again.
As we're getting back into the groove of things we've realized that we are in need of several different items, such as earphones, card stock, and construction paper...things that a kindergarten classroom has a hard time living without.
Our current earphones have reached the end of their lifespan. They do not work half of the time. Them working is essential. It is difficult trying to teach when you have approximately eight computers/iPads running/talking at the same time. If I can't teach I know that my students can't concentrate and do the things being asked of them on the computer.
Our supply of construction paper and card stock is low also. Our classroom loves to create. We love to turn our learning into art, to bring our learning to life. For instance, when painting and gluing it is essential that we have thicker paper...paper that won't wrinkle up, paper that is sturdy. When creating those fancy little headbands that we like we need paper that will stand up on its own and not flop over. This list just goes on and on.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
