Save our sore backsides! One day of professional development weeks before we'd opened our doors to children and I could empathize with my kiddos who sit in chairs for the better part of their 8 hour day with us.
My kiddos with special needs are some of the toughest you will meet.
They are students are 5th, 6th, 7th, & 8th graders striving to get up to grade level. Most of them have transferred schools several times before finding us, in the hopes that their specific needs will be met THIS time. I have the best job in the world, and my kids are rockstars in every aspect of their life. Despite the obstacles they face every day, they come to work for us every day, believing in our promise to get them to AND through college if they bring their "A" game day in and day out. Over 90% of our students are on the free/reduced lunch plan and to many students, our school is their safe haven.
My Project
Of course I let my kiddos tuck in their chair and stand behind their desk...but sometimes they want to sit and do group work, or get help from a teammate with something they don't understand. Sometimes they do computer work. My hope is that with these cushions, sitting will be more enjoyable, and those that like to wiggle in class (let's be real, they all like to wiggle ;-) ) can do so in their own space!
A chance for my kids with special needs to remain focused and engaged when confronted with concepts that challenge them.
Comfortable space means paying attention longer. It gets them one step closer to grasping that concept, and acing that ACT/SAT to be accepted to the college of their choice. Their education will change the trajectory of their life. They will have the power to change the world and their place within it, when given a little "wiggle" room. Thank you.
