My Students
Our school is in the heart of Brooklyn, NY. It is a brand-new school with a lot of potential. The school includes students from pre-k to kindergarten, and it is a melting pot of children from all around the world.
Our school is in a high-poverty area, and about 95% of the students in the school receive free lunch.
There are 15 energetic three and four-year-old children in my class but there are not a lot of funds to enrich these students' education because of the budget cuts. Although our families give us support, they can't always help out financially.
My Project
Pre-Kindergarten students are very busy and they work hard. As such, they still need downtime to recharge their minds and bodies. Having a designated rest time gives them a chance to decompress. Having rest time encourages preschoolers to slow down, relax, and as a result better process what they have learned that day.
When rest time is over, students need a place to fold the mats and stow them away.
Separate sleeping and resting, even for siblings, reduces the spread of disease from one child to another. Droplet transmission occurs when droplets containing microorganisms generated from an infected person, primarily during coughing, sneezing, or talking are propelled a short distance (three feet) and deposited on the eyes, nose, or mouth. This storage shelf will ensure each child had a safe and clean place to keep their mats.
More than half of students from low‑income households
