My Students

My students are all 5 years old. They are creative thinkers, problem-solvers, dreamers, achievers. They are curious about learning, and they show incredible wonder about everyday experiences that we take for granted.

Our classroom is designed to show deep respect for children as individuals.

My students have their own ideas, concerns, questions, thoughts, dreams, beliefs, and more. Children at this age are learning about who they are as people, and how they as people fit into larger systems such as family, school, community and humanity. Each child comes from an individual family, with individual belief systems, customs, and values. My students come from a variety of diverse backgrounds, bringing their traditions, cultures, and values into our classroom, teaching all of us about themselves.

My students are teachers. I am constantly learning through them. They teach me about the names of a variety of bugs, the height of the tallest building in the world, and how the planets revolve around the sun due to gravity. They will continue to teach me even after they have left my classroom.

My Project

At our Visual and Performing Arts Magnet school, we emphasis the use of the arts in the learning process. Participation in many forms of the arts is directly related to a child's success in school and beyond.

The children are eager to use our painting easels to create beautiful works of art, but once finished, we do not have a respectful, adequate space for them to set them while they are drying.

Often, while they are drying, they are accidentally bumped or the wind folds them, which is disrespectful to their pieces of art. We need somewhere to hold these great works of art that will hold them in a respectful manner, displaying them like the true works of art they are!

We also focus a lot in our classroom on independence. We want the children to feel like they are capable of making their own positive choices and take ownership of their classroom and space. Right now, the children aren't able to hang their own artwork after completion, but with a new drying rack, they will be able to choose paper, hang the paper on the easel, take their painting off the easel, and place the paper on the drying rack to take home all independently! This will give them a deep sense of ownership over the entire process of creating their works of art, leading to deeper and more meaningful artwork itself.
