Respect of Culture Through Music!

My students need 19 books and CDs like "Putumayo Presents" to build an appreciation and respect for diversity.

I teach Spanish to pre-k through fifth graders. I use music as a means to get their attention and open up their world. We are an International Baccalaureate school which strives to create internationally minded individuals, yet our school is set in a very homogenious urban setting. Exposing students to a variety of music that they would otherwise never hear is my easy and quick way of using their love of rhythm to gain their respect for the Hispanic culture.

My inner city students have a very limited sense of culture, music being one prime example. They hear a country song and cover their ears and make a face. Did they actually listen to the song? No, they are just afraid of anything they are not used to. This is why I always have a Spanish song playing for my students when they walk into my classroom. The more they hear other styles, the more they are inclined to open their minds. Eventually, even the "tough guy" starts to move to the rhythm. They realize it is okay to enjoy something that is different than they are used to. They are usually so intrigued, they beg for another song. I'm just running out of interesting songs, as CD collecting is not the cheapest of hobbies.

"On our way to school my child insisted upon putting on the Spanish radio station!" When a parent came to me with this scenario I realized I wanted to go further with my infusion of Spanish music because it was making a difference. It would be great to be able to incorporate more music into my program. Putumayo has an outstanding collection of music from all around the world, I just don't have enough money to buy as many diverse CDs as I would like. The ten cds I ask for here, are an amazing array of hispanic cultural music. They range from reggaeton to salsa to children's songs. The greater the variety of songs I can play for my students, the better my chances are for opening up every young mind.

Your help will ensure that my students are able to hear a vast collection of music from around the world. They will be able to use the universal "language" of music and rhythm to become accepting of diversity.
