Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are middle schoolers at a Title I school in New York. My students come from diverse backgrounds and many from tough homes. They are overcoming social and emotional barriers each day to receive an education.

My students are active and enthusiastic.

They are motivated and eager to do well. They want to learn and are constantly seeking opportunities to take ownership of their learning.

Our school is in a high needs and high poverty area in which most children are on free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch programs. My students work hard despite the challenges they face. Many students stay after school, participate in after-school clubs and activities and are always striving to be, and do, better for themselves and for others.

My Project

When we go back to school, the classroom that many students are used to will not be the same.

Help me give my students a variety of tools to help make the transition back to school a little less anxiety inducing.

The journals will allow students to write out and draw how they are feeling. There are many unknowns and many students are not always ready or willing to speak. I am hoping to embed mindfulness and gratitude activities into the classroom. Having these different items will allow me to be more flexible in meeting my students and helping them transition from this long period of remote learning to a classroom setting. The snacks, yoga mats, cushions, and team building game will go a long way with building community and establishing connections with one another. I know this coming year will not be easy, but hopefully these resources will help with making them feel a little bit more welcome.
