Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are middle schoolers at a Title I school in New York. My students come from diverse backgrounds and many from tough homes. They are overcoming social and emotional barriers each day to receive an education.

My students are active and enthusiastic.

They are motivated and eager to do well. They want to learn and are constantly seeking opportunities to take ownership of their learning.

Our school is in a high needs and high poverty area in which most children are on free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch programs. My students work hard despite the challenges they face. Many students stay after school, participate in after-school clubs and activities and are always striving to be, and do, better for themselves and for others.

My Project

When we go back to school, the classroom that many students are used to will not be the same.

Help me give my students a variety of books that can provide an escape for them, or allow them to better understand their emotions.

Adding a collection of social emotional, mental health, and graphic novels in our classroom library will help me to provide the support my students need and deserve.

The journals will allow students to write out and draw how they are feeling. There are many unknowns and many students are not always ready or willing to speak. The Rubik's Cube will provide students with an outlet to engage in a manner that is fun and analytical-who knows if this will get them on a path to be speed solving Rubik's Cube participants! The lamp will be a great addition to add an element of ambience in our classroom as we seek to create a cozy reading nook. Finally, the mask and cleaning supplies will help in keeping us safe as we embark on this learning journey together.
