The Kindergarten Dual Language Program began 3 years ago at C.S. 102. The first class is now in second grade. While in Kindergarten, the ELL students are introduced to English through the content areas of Science, Social Studies and Math. There are two classes in two classrooms, with a Spanish teacher in one classroom and an English teacher (me) in the adjacent classroom.
In the morning, each class learns phonics and reading in their native language. In the afternoon, our classes switch. My English dominant class goes next door to Spanish as a Second Language classes, and the Spanish dominant class comes to me for instruction in English. Both teachers do identical lessons. Instruction is in the content areas. We select a theme for the week and then read books, sing songs, paint a mural and do projects.
In the next couple of months we will be focusing on transportation, neighborhoods, careers and plants. The children learn so much more when they can create and work as a small learning community. When the classroom is print and project rich it makes it easier for the children to grasp the concept's that are taught. I am requesting supplies such as bulletin board paper (for our murals and concept word walls), paint, scissors, felt, foam, costumes (for careers), soil, flower pots and seeds.
