This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students from my ICT class live in a very poor, urban neighborhood with mostly immigrant families who speak little to no English at home. So, in addition to having students with learning disabilities, the majority of our students are also ENL learners. This makes gauging their interest in both reading and writing difficult to say the least.
Our students are very behind in reading this school year, so we are looking to be able to purchase additional phonics resources online, to supplement the program that our school uses.
My Project
These materials will help our students build their reading skills throughout the school year. In order to becomes a better reader students must master many different skill sets. We do have a phonics program that our school uses, but we need additional resources to supplement where the program is lacking. What is needed to fully engage our students, are more hands on activities that the students can work on independently.
Some of the skills that we are working on this year are short and long vowel sounds as well as blends and digraphs.
Hands on resources are excellent in helping students to master these skills.
