This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine never having your identity represented in your school's curriculum. Imagine being from an incredibly rich, vibrant and diverse community.
This fall, I will continue my work as an English teacher at a community cooperative charter school in Richmond, California.
Richmond is the lowest performing large school district in California. I have the privilege of teaching bright and capable students, many of whom are English language learners. My students will be able to effectively write, read, and articulate their ideas, not only in the classroom, but outside of the classroom and within their communities, as well.
My Project
This project will directly fund learning materials for students in my classroom. The funds for this project will go towards class sets of two books that will aid in teaching my students about empathy and collective memory. The funds will also go towards a pencil sharpener, post its for annotations, as well as a Samsung tablet for my students who need in-class Spanish-to-English translation.
Many of my students are struggling readers, and implementing engaging books and curriculum is critical in increasing literacy opportunities in my classroom.
My students really value being able to have books, and having class sets of Maus and The Outsiders will enable me to teach them how to actively read and annotate.
