Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are curious learners, an energetic handful, and are always thirsty for my knowledge. To keep up with their varying learning styles, they require an abundance of hands on activities that will quench their eagerness to learn. The biggest challenge is not having enough resources to do so.
I am entering my second year being with these dear students and it is truly amazing to see the growth they have made in such little time with such few resources.
I can only imagine what they can accomplish with even more resources. My precious gems consist of 15 TK - 2nd grade students with moderate intellectual disabilities. With their beautiful smiles and twinkling eyes, I know they desire to learn more and very much enjoy my lessons, as it portrays itself in the kind of work they produce on a daily basis. Considering that we are on the alternate curriculum, my students are required to learn many skills beyond the typical school age children. They are to learn functional academic, life, and social skills that will make them productive, independent, and sociable students out in the community. My school has limited financial resources, given the location we are in. Let us not think it is OK that they don't deserve the very best, despite this fact.
My Project
High interest activities, with tactile, sensory, and auditory materials, will aid their success as they are gravitated towards tangible materials.
Students are to learn functional mathematics which will make them progress and succeed as positive constructive individuals in the future. Having the ability to have financial stability is a huge must as they are to venture out as adults.
Yes, my students are only TK-2ND graders, but this is a life long goal, and why not start them young? Having magnetic coins and dollars will make my lessons more engaging, having see through counting tubes will help them have a better understanding of number sense, and having giant tracing numbers will aid them with having better fine motor skills. The All About Me Letters Pocket Chart, English Alphabet Books, & Alphabet Sounds Photo Library will be an amazing resource that I plan to use as supplemental activities that my aid will utilize in small group instruction. This will be so much fun/educational!
Having resources that my aids and I can use to gain student attention is truly what is essential in their learning process.
These donations will be used in small group activities. These instructional materials will have them think it is fun, but in reality along with this fun, they will be learning life long skills! These principal skills that will be taught with the assistance of these resources are indeed life changing.
