Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a Resource Specialist in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students the same access they are getting in the general education as well as into my Resource classroom when they pull out of general education.
Students come into my class and look forward to improving their math, reading, writing skills as I am trying to meet each student's IEP's (Individualized Education Plan) goals
I teach students from grades 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and fifth grade. All of my students are Hispanic and have students who are English Only as well as English Learners. I work in a community that is primarily Hispanic population.
My Project
When students finish their work early, I will have my Resource students to practice Razkids -- a an online reading program that my schools use to help students to improve their reading comprehension skills and Ji Ji Math - an online program that provides interactive, graphically-rich animations that visually represent mathematical concepts to improve conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills. Due to scheduling conflicts some of my students miss opportunities to do these two programs when they come see me their schedule Resource program. When my Resource students finish their intended objectives on their IEP Goals in Reading, Writing, and Math, I can provide them time to do Raz Kids and Ji Math. In addition, I will encourage students to start typing their writing assignments on the computer which in turn gives them practice to prepare for the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium which involves them using computers to type in their work.
As a Resource Teacher I do not have any laptops or computers in my classroom except one old MAC laptop that is assigned to my teacher assistant.
Having more than one laptop can give access to my students in all grade levels, opportunities to improve their reading and math skills using these two respective online programs while not missing much with their respective classes. They will maximize their learning and they won't fall behind.
