Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My scholars are persistent, determined souls who desperately want to succeed in life. The school library media center was their connection and go-to spot to make sense of the pressure of academics, cliches, and the stress of their environment and home lives. This distance learning project will help foster a routine and a strong sense of connection to the library. Scholars will get the chance to be creative and learn at the same time. They will be able to participate in a virtual library world. Presently, all children are not in school as the district has been closed since March.

Kids are learning from home and many are in small apartments, public housing and have very limited space with multiple family members.

Currently, they only have paper and pencil as resources. The requested supplies will enable them to continue library makerspace activities. These supplies will go to a handful of library patrons who were regulars in the school library and depended on it as a life line. These scholars used the library to stay connected as they had limited interactions with others their own age.

My Project

While being confined to small spaces, children become quickly bored if they do not have activities and stimulating things to do. Resin supplies will enable them to be creative, make tangible projects, and explore something new and fun. Having access to resources will promote innovation, design, and making. Scholars can create with paint and resin. They will use the supplies with accompanying instructions and makerspace directed tutorials. The fan is for a child who does not have AC swill cool the summer heat in NY.

These resources will foster social-emotional learning and create joy and a certain calmness internally.

Specifically, scholars will learn STEM and science concepts through library makerspace lessons. They will learn measurement and chemical reactions. Many of my scholars are depressed and disturbed currently. Additionally, social injustices are even more troubling as my scholars are children of color. In an urban area such as ours, many of the kids have experienced discrimination, prejudice, and social injustices firsthand. The supplies will foster creativity and ultimately uplift their spirits. Makerspace learning at home will allow them to learn and practice academic enrichment through making.

Thank you for your consideration, time, and support of public school children. When you care about the kids, you care about America's future.
