I teach in an inner city Chicago high school. My students are struggling readers, but have been working diligently to boost their reading levels by choosing self selected reading books that interest and challenge them. We have a vast collection of books in my classroom - some were donated by other teachers and parents, some were bought at garage sales and library sales, some were donated by DonorsChoose donors, and many are books I bought on my own. I've been teaching for 3 1/2 years now, so my classroom has quite a collection of books.
Unfortunately, the books are currently crowded onto one shelf and are not separated by genre or subject. I would like to teach my students the value of reading a variety of genres and subject areas. I will teach them how to keep a classroom library. Together we will decide how to organize books and come up with a check-out and reshelving policy. This will give my students ownership of our library while teaching them responsibility AND genres of literature.
A well-organized classroom gives students a sense of security. I would like for our classroom library to do the same thing. This is just one more way for me to help my students gain a love for reading.
