Researching the Gods and Goddesses Behind The Odyssey

My Students
Do you remember reading "The Odyssey" in high school? If you do, you may also remember being confused about the many characters, gods, and goddesses in this classic epic poem and wondering how they were all related to Odysseus. My students have experienced this same confusion.
My students are 9th graders at a charter school in Colorado.
We are a small school, so as a result, we have a small library. My students are interested and excited about reading The Odyssey, but struggle with completely understanding this classic poem because they lack background knowledge of Greek Mythology. Our library does not have a very extensive collection of books on this topic, so I am hoping to supplement with books in my own classroom.
My Project
I am requesting a library of research materials on Greek Gods and Goddesses to help make The Odyssey come alive for my students! Each year, we complete a research project on Greek Mythology in which students teach their class about one Greek God or Goddess. These presentations help prepare the students to read The Odyssey and build their background knowledge of gods and goddesses.
Without this collection of research materials, my students will have to continue to share the meager number of books our school library has available.
With this collection of research materials, my students will be interested and inspired to go beyond the required assignment and learn everything they can about Greek Mythology during this project and free learning time.
