"Teaching in the Internet age means we must teach tomorrow's skills today." Jennifer Fleming
This quote from Jennifer Fleming defines the students' needs to use and understand technological capabilities in their daily lives.
My students are English as a Second Language learners who do not interact with the English language beyond our school.
Their parents do not have the language skills to ask them questions about their learning or reinforce lessons learned in school. This upcoming year, I will be teaching Special Education in addition to my English as a Second Language population. In order to truly differentiate my teaching and address all the needs of my students, I will need to incorporate more technological media in my teaching.
My students rarely hear a native English-speaker's voice other than my own. The addition of a learner-responsive tool in my English as a Second Language classroom would benefit every student in their personal language growth.
My Project
Previously, I requested a Microsoft Surface Tablet for my classroom and it was a very successful tool for research! However, since there was only 1 tablet, the benefit of the resource was not felt by every student in the way that it could have been.
We are a Title 1 school, which means that my children, nearly all of my learners, are currently living below the poverty line. My students do not have access to technological resources at home or in the classroom (we have computer class once a week!) My students need to build this essential knowledge in order to access a lifetime of learning.
With these donations, you are exposing an underprivileged population of NYC students to resources that will build their scientific and mathematical literacy. In addition, the students who are struggling to develop their basic English language skills will be able to enjoy language learning through games.
Technology is an increasingly important element in the daily lives of people worldwide.
With endless opportunities for the use of a tablet in the classroom, students will be able to interact with their learning rather than a passive learner. With these iPads, I hope to further develop a research center where students can understand the research process. I want students to cultivate their academic interests with their research and choose what they learn. It is my hope that students love learning.
