My students need the web cutter kit to help them as they learn how to use DNA sequence databases.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Munzert's classroom raised $191

My Students
RI's new funding formula has decimated our district's budget and threatened the future of programs like the biotech academy. The decreased budget makes it difficult to secure molecular biology materials to run the course.
Each of the students in the biotech academy have elected to be there.
They participate in all aspects of running a research lab, they make their own reagents and solutions. They manage inventory and plan experiments to enter them in our school and state science fair. Students in the biotech academy are motivated and passionate about their science, and many are planning to go to college to pursue degrees in bioscience.
My Project
The web cutter kit utilizes the NCBI database, filled with all published DNA sequences, to help students identify a gene of interest, devise a plan to "cut it out" or its source genome, and "paste it in" to a DNA vector. This vector is then moved into a bacterium like e-coli.
From this unit, students will learn how to plan their own investigations to study genes of their choosing. In our biomanufacturing course, students will independently move a gene into a vector and transform bacteria. This process is critical in the research and development stage of the production of many biopharmaceuticals.
The experience of cloning a gene into a DNA vector is a very unique one for high school students.
Having this experience , and the skills developed from this experience will help distinguish our students as they apply to colleges and for positions in the field.
