This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am currently a Special Education teacher in a 7th grade 30:2 ICT classroom in Bronx, NY. I teach these students math, English, and social studies. I also am the social studies teacher for the 8th grade 30:2 ICT class. My students are dedicated, driven, and motivated to learn, however often lack resources that could enhance their success.
Many of my students not only take care of themselves, but their siblings as well.
Parents work long hours and are often not present to take care of the students needs. I run a "life skills" after school program that centers around acquisition of real-world skills that can benefit them outside of the classroom. My school is located in an area of high crime and low socio-economic status. The materials they are provided for school are far below the standard. This project would help provide an accessible means of technology to over 100 students in total through my 7th and 8th students, as well as my after school students.
My Project
My students desperately need a portable means of technology during social studies class. Research is our primary focus, however I feel as though my lessons aren't able to reach their full potential due to a lack of hands-on practice. This iPad Pro with keyboard will provide my 7th and 8th grade social studies students the opportunity to practice important skills such as how to properly find content online, how to determine if a source is reliable, how to properly cite sources, etc.
My students are genuinely interested in Social Studies and acquiring real-world skills.
