Rescue from a Rainy Day

My students need rainy day activities for P.E. The gymnasium is not always available and scarves, bean bags, and dodgeballs will provide an opportunity for our students to learn juggling skills and hand-eye coordination.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a P.E. teacher, I am fortunate to interact with nearly all the students that attend my school at least once a week. They enjoy P.E. because in my class we strive to get every student involved and try to make something great happen every day. My students accept challenges and always rise to the expectation that is set for them. This attitude is especially impressive when you consider that my students make up the most diverse group of people I have ever encountered.

I teach at a Title I School in Nevada in which a high percentage of my students come from bilingual homes and receive free or reduced price lunch.

My students often face tough obstacles in their lives but arrive to school smiling and ready to learn. They love their teachers and they adore their principal. Our school truly is a community – a family. We each do our part, as student and teacher work side by side with one mission in mind: our students’ success. Each classroom in our school has their college graduation date written on the board. We help the students set their goals high and we strive to help them achieve those goals.

My Project

My school is located in Nevada and since we use our multi-purpose gymnasium for many events during the day, we typically have our P.E. classes outside. Every now and then, we experience days where rain or wind prevents us from doing our activities inside and we are required to move into a classroom setting for P.E. I have often asked my students what ideas they might have for our rainy day activities instead of just watching a video.

My students have been suggesting we do juggling activities in my class for as long as I can remember.

Juggling is a great way to promote movement, coordination, and it provides a different challenge for every individual student. These scarves, bean bags, and even the dodgeballs will allow me to finally introduce juggling to my students. They will also be put to use in dance activities, team games, and partner work. We are so very excited to no longer let the rain ruin our awesome P.E. class.
