Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 20 third grade students in a 100% free and reduced-price lunch Title I school. Despite my students being below grade level in reading and math, they are always excited to come to school and love to take on the challenges that come with each new topic or subject that is brought to them.

I want to create a classroom environment that is nurturing, engaging, and a place students can thrive!

I would like the opportunity to provide this experience by making sure my students have all the materials and supplies that will help them grow as learners and help them continue to develop and grow their love of learning.

My Project

I am looping up to third grade with my amazing class! I want to be ready for my excited group of learners and continue to help them grow through this very important year. Graphic novels are a great way to engage students who are reluctant readers or who believe they are bad at reading. Because comics are visual, even if the text is difficult, the visuals give the reader support in comprehending the story. My goal is to have more graphic novels to excite my reluctant reader and those students struggling with reading. Something else that my classroom library is lacking is diverse characters in books.

It is so important for children to see themselves in stories and for young girls to read and see strong female leads and role models.

My students are very diverse, and unfortunately my classroom library does not reflect this. With these new, diverse books, my students will be able to choose a story that reflects their background or a character that inspires them and be excited to read, whether they are a reluctant reader or not. This will help my students feel empowered and continue to grow their love of reading. Please help me fill my library with strong female leads and diverse graphic novels to engage my new 3rd graders!
