My Students
I am a New York City public school educator. I am a part of a district which is a cohort of many schools across our city and has the highest amount of special needs students. Our district is specifically designed to educate students with disabilities. My students have Autism and multiple disabilities. They are also economically disadvantaged. Our district works a 12-month program, so it is essential to have appropriate educational materials and curriculum to support them and meet their individualized learning needs.
I teach students with disabilities, and 100% of my students qualify for free and reduced-priced lunch.
Students often come to us with many struggles from home. I want their education to be fun and exciting. I am working to create a space where students can feel safe and represented. I want to see how my students can learn and grow.
My students are some of the most disadvantaged students in New York. I want to ensure that we can meet their needs and encourage their learning to move further.
My Project
Many times students come into classrooms and learning and cannot see themselves in any of stories they read or the work that they complete. Teaching in a diverse community like New York City makes for a classroom filled with students from all types of backgrounds. My goal is to become a better educator that includes all students in the learning environment. I want them to all feel like they are represented in the classroom. This project will bring culturally responsive literature into the classroom. I want my students to be happy, to be able to finally see themselves in a story, to feel represented and valued. This literature will provide them with these enriching experiences that are foundational as their growth as a person. No one should ever feel left out, no one should ever feel like they don't belong. A variety of books that represent a variety of skin colors will ensure our library projects represent the classroom in a true manner.
