Help me give my students an opportunity to see themselves represented in the books they read.

My Students
I am the lucky teacher of 25 vivacious and curious fourth graders. We represent almost all the countries on the globe. From China to Africa to the Philippines. We live in San Francisco, California, and have the privilege of living in a wonderfully diverse city that is truly represented in our classroom.
We love to read, write, play, dance, and sing.
We play sports, solve problems, and work hard to make the world we live in a better place. I am so proud of all of them.
My Project
Reading is the one of the most important things that you learn to do. But what makes a reader want to read? Why are some children voracious readers and some could are less?
Imagine being able to pick up a book and seeing a character that looks like you, lives in a place like you do, or struggling with the same problems.
That's representation. When children see themselves in books and are able to read them, it can make the difference between them becoming a lifelong reader or not. When children have access to stories that have characters with brown skin, have parents that are divorced, question their orientation, that will automatically make a child feel less isolated and that what they are going through in their life isn't something that they are only going through.
The books that have been selected cover many facets that aren't common in children's literature. Having books with African American characters, gay characters, characters who deal with abuse, or are from homes with divorced parents can help a student see themselves in the world. Also, having books with accessible text can also help make sure that the stories that are being told can help these students grow as readers.
