it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Hi! I teach 27 first graders at an all girls charter school in the South Bronx. Due to the current shutdown of our school, my students are at home receiving live instruction from me. They all have a tablet that was given to them by the school and some of my kids have a computer. Otherwise, my students would not have the adequate technology and supplies for learning at home. I have had to send them supplies and work packets through snail mail throughout these last two months.
My Project
Research suggests that children tend to prefer and are more likely to engage with literature that reflects their personal experiences.
When children of color encounter characters that look like them and whose stories mirror their own experiences and culture, they are more likely to see how reading can play a role in their lives and to develop a love of reading.
I would like to provide books to my students that aim to promote cultural awareness by cultivating a child’s understanding of themselves, their communities and the world around them. These vibrantly illustrated books reflect images and experiences with which children of all cultures can identify. I would like my students to have copies of these books so that they see characters reflected in books that look like them.
