My Students
I always tell each of my World Changers that they will go and change the world, of course for the better. Many of them have not been able to log on during this pandemic due to the bandwidth in their apartment complex. The school provided devices and hot spots, but the connection is very weak. I also have students who are in need of structure. They can't control their home environment and sometimes if they do log in they may log in at 2 in the morning on a Saturday and that is it for the week. They log in to say hello and to tell me they love me. My heart continues to break, but I am striving to be strong for them as well as myself.
I sent out photo albums and books to each of my students earlier during this pandemic and their parents sent messages to say how overjoyed the kids were and how they couldn't put the books down.
I feel confident that if I can get books and tools that relate to what will be taught next year they will have a stronger start and less regression.
My Project
I don't know what the upcoming school year will look like, but right now my district is leaning towards virtual learning for the 2020-2021 school year. I will be a 5th grade Science and Social Studies teacher.
Representation Matters simply means for all students to see themselves represented in books.
I have a very large classroom library, but I haven't been able to get into my classroom since March and may not be able to get back into it anytime soon. I serve black and brown children who must see themselves represented in the books I plan to read to them virtually. I will be teaching the Civil War which can be a very triggering topic during this sensitive time.
However, I would not want my students to walk away from 5th grade not knowing that their skin is just like it is supposed to be by reading Sulive or that their hair is their crown and is kinky for a reason. The book Don't Touch My Hair is a great book that makes them appreciate their hair. All books I am so generously asking for represent who they are, their culture, their roots, and their future.
Thank you in advance for allowing me to build a home library that represents the children I will serve this upcoming school year.
