My Students
My students are a curious, enthusiastic, and dynamic group of first grade students from New York City.
Living in NYC, the students in my classroom are an extremely diverse group of young minds who represent different cultures, values, and lived experiences.
As such, literature is a fundamental tool that allows my students to travel to places where they can be seen in authentic ways, as well as the voices and experiences of other people too. My students thrive in an environment that is rich in literature, but also one that creates an inclusive space for all different kinds of people to be represented.
My Project
Do you get to see yourself represented in the books that you read? Well, for my students, seeing themselves represented authentically in the literature that they read is not always easy.
My students need books that are more inclusive and culturally responsive.
Culturally responsive books includes the representation of people from all different backgrounds, cultures, ethnicities, sexes, genders, abilities, and experiences. When students are able to see themselves represented authentically through a medium like literature, it has a profound effect on their identity. It provides a sense of validation and belonging. It also helps children to build and develop greater empathy towards all different kinds of people.
Please help support my students to have greater access to literature that allows them to be seen and represented in rich and authentic ways.
